Biography

Miao Ying’s works show what the internet is like behind China’s ‘Great Firewall’; China’s own, state supervised version of the internet, with its own versions of Youtube, Ebay, Facebook and Twitter. Her online works are often based on the visual culture of meme platforms. Websites such as Bilibili (the Chines Youtube) make use of dan mu (literally bullet points), a functionality which superimposes users’ comments on top of videos. Creating a sense of shared viewing experience, and the more popular a video, the more comments. In Miao Ying’s works, the community becomes the collective author.
