Rafaël Rozendaal and JODI are part of group exhibition Electric Op at Musée d'arts de Nantes, which was previously presented at Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

Rich in a collection of modern and contemporary art in which abstraction plays a major role, the Musée d’arts de Nantes and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (United States) are presenting a unique exhibition highlighting the historical, theoretical, and formal connections between optical art and video/computer art, from the 1960s to the present day.

In the 1960s, optical art spread widely throughout the arts and popular culture, driven by artists such as Victor Vasarely, Yaacov Agam, and Jesús Rafael Soto. Centering the viewer’s experience of the artwork, Op Art artists use optical effects to deceive the audience’s perception.

The rise of information and communication technologies fascinated optical artists. At the same time, computer engineers began to recognize the artistic potential of their tools. Both began experimenting and exploring the creative capabilities of these new tools and languages. The result: programmed repetition, binary code, pixels, and moiré patterns became motifs that artists continue to work with today.

With more than 80 works—including paintings, computer-generated drawings, sculptures, videos, and digital installations—this exhibition reveals how optical art and new media have influenced each other, from the pioneers of the 1960s to today’s contemporary digital artists.
