His practice seems to be aimed at dismantling the mystery of the digital black box and making things as physical as possible. Drawing a Button is an extreme example of this. The drawing in chiaroscuro technique represents a button with | and O: on and off, but also the 1 and 0 of the digital domain or Inside and Outside. In one drawing, Leegte manages to capture the contrast between man and machine, culture and nature. A push of a button connects the poles: there is a choice that has consequences.

Computer history

What happens behind that button, illustrates In a Blink of an Eye. The earliest computers were the size of a house but with less power than the chip in a modern kitchen scale. Leegte makes that visually clear by depicting computing power in series of figures. In the time it takes to blink once, his very first Commodore 64 barely filled any sheet. His latest iPhone broke out enough material for a huge volume. The numbers have been given colors. A gradient has been left behind, creating patterns. As if you are looking at geological profiles of computer history. Leegte used one of the newest computers to c reate a hyperrealistic, living landscape, as you see in games like Minecraft. Nature has run wild here. The wind pulls on trees, waves crash on the coast and at the same time the sun is blaring hysterically. It is digital landscape painting with a dystopian twist. No loosely sung paradise but a glimpse into the future where our urge to create leads to destructive chaos.

In de tijd die het kost om één keer met je ogen te knipperen vulde zijn allereerste Commodore 64 nog net geen vel. Zijn recentste iPhone braakt ge- noeg materiaal uit voor een enorm veelluik. De cijfers hebben kleuren gekregen. Daarop is een verloop los- gelaten waardoor patronen ontstaan. Alsof je naar geologische profielen van de computergeschiedenis kijkt.

Leegte gebruikte een van de nieuwste computers om een hyperrealistisch, levend landschap te creëren, zoals je dat ziet in games als Minecraft. De natuur is hier op hol geslagen.
