Op de toren van de Oude Kerk, het oudste gebouw van Amsterdam en centrum voor hedendaagse kunst, is vanaf 3 maart een werk van Dennis Rudolph te zien. Samen met een Augmented Reality (AR) app, die is te downloaden in de App Store, is The 5 Minute Apocalypse te ervaren in de buitenlucht, als een troostrijk beeld dat onze online en offline wereld voor een paar minuten laat versmelten.

Het project is een initiatief van de Oude Kerk, die met het idee kwam voor een werk op de Oudekerkstoren. De toren is eigendom van de gemeente en staat voor een half jaar in de steigers staat voor restauratie. Opdrachtgever en curator van het werk is de Oude Kerk. Het werk is gerealiseerd met steun van het AFK en Mondriaanfonds.

Met het sluiten van de deuren door Covid-19 en de restauratie van de toren, realiseerden we ons dat de buitenkant van de kerk de enige plek is waar mensen nog iets nieuws en iets ouds kunnen zien. We vroegen daarom de Berlijnse kunstenaar Dennis Rudolph een nieuw werk voor de buitenzijde van de kerktoren te maken – The 5 Minute Apocalypse – als een troostrijk beeld dat onze online en offline wereld enkele minuten laat versmelten. Het schilderij op de toren komt via je telefoon of tablet tot leven.

The 5 minute apocalypse

Geprikkeld door het gegeven dat de Oudekerkstoren als onderdeel van een religieus gebouw in publiek bezit is, legt Rudolph in The 5 minute Apocalypse een verband met de Christelijke achtergrond van de Europese vlag. Het verhaal van Johannes’ openbaringen uit het Nieuwe Testament diende als uitgangspunt voor het ontwerp; een cirkel van sterren. Beide gaan over de ontmoeting tussen religie en politiek. Een visioen spiegelt voor Rudolph het gegeven van virtuele realiteit, alleen jij kunt het zien, het is niet ‘echt’, maar het beeld verschijnt wel in de werkelijkheid. Virtuele realiteit avant la lettre.

Rudolph brengt in zijn werk traditie en vernieuwing samen door een klassiek genre als de schilderkunst te mengen met nieuwe media zoals virtuele en zogeheten ‘aangevulde’ realiteit. De beelden zijn geen letterlijke aanvullingen op de werkelijkheid, maar gaan een relatie aan.

Over Dennis Rudolph

Dennis Rudolph (1979) is een conceptuele kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Berlijn. Hij werkt zowel met oude als nieuwe media en technieken zoals video, schilderkunst, grafiek en performance en verbindt deze in sommige werken ook met elkaar. Rudolph studeerde aan de Universität der Künste in Berlijn, de Repin-Academie in St. Petersburg en het Language and Culture Institute in Beijing. Recente tentoonstellingen van hem waren onder meer te zien in het Museum der Arbeit Hamburg; DTLA Film Festival, Los Angeles; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlijn; Moscow International Biennale for Young Art; CAC Bretigny, Frankrijk; Nayerische Staatsoper, Duitsland; Kunstverein Arnsberg; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlijn. Sinds 2014 runt Rudolph de tentoonstellingsruimte, residentie en studio State of the Art in Berlijn.

From 3 March, a work by Dennis Rudolph can be seen on the tower of the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam's oldest building and center for contemporary art. Together with an Augmented Reality (AR) app, which can be downloaded from the App Store, The 5 Minute Apocalypse can be experienced in the open air, as a comforting image that merges our online and offline world for a few minutes.

The project is an initiative of the Oude Kerk, which came up with the idea for a work on the Oudekerkstoren. The tower is owned by the municipality and is under construction for six months before restoration. The work is commissioned and curated by the Oude Kerk. The work was realized with support from the AFK and Mondriaanfonds.

With the closing of the doors by Covid-19 and the restoration of the tower, we realized that the outside of the church is the only place where people can still see something new and old. We therefore asked the Berlin artist Dennis Rudolph to create a new work for the outside of the church tower - The 5 Minute Apocalypse - as a comforting image that allows our online and offline world to merge for a few minutes. The painting on the tower comes to life via your phone or tablet.

The 5 minute apocalypse

Irritated by the fact that the Oudekerkstoren is in public possession as part of a religious building, Rudolph makes a connection in The 5 minute Apocalypse with the Christian background of the European flag. The story of John's New Testament revelations served as the basis for the design; a circle of stars. Both are about the meeting between religion and politics. For Rudolph, a vision mirrors the fact of virtual reality, only you can see it, it is not "real", but the image does appear in reality. Virtual reality avant la lettre.

Rudolph brings together tradition and innovation in his work by mixing a classical genre such as painting with new media such as virtual and so-called "supplemented" reality. The images are not literal additions to reality, but enter into a relationship.

Dennis Rudolph (1979) is a conceptual artist who lives and works in Berlin.
